Volunteer Madison

Madison is a socialist, hippy location. Volunteering is a socialist, hippy activity. Combined, however, Madison is only the 4th most volunteering mid-sized city in America, behind two Utah cities and Iowa City.

VolunteeringinAmerica.gov released rates of community service ranked by states, large cities, and mid-sized cities. (The numbers are mostly 3 year moving averages.) The 41.5% of Madison area residents volunteered, compared to a national average of 27%.

The website allows for breaking down the volunteering by age group, and within the college age volunteers, Wisconsin does very well (37.8% of college students volunteer). Among young adults (16-24), Milwaukee compares favorably to other large cities (31.3% volunteer, 3rd highest behind the Twin Cities and Salt Lake City).

While these numbers are generally high compared to national average, there is obviously room for improvement. LSSA will be coordinating a few volunteer activities in the upcoming school year – so be ready to help out your neighbors. If you know of other good activities that could use extra help, La Flog can help publicize your efforts and bring in more recruits. We can be public affairs working for the public good.
