New Student Orientation

Tuesday, August 25

  • Grainger Hall

9:00        Check-in and Continental Breakfast: Meet the staff, students and faculty, pick up your name tag, have individual photos taken, edit your bio, order your “Bob” t-shirt or mug and/or schedule an individual appointment with Student Services Coordinator, Mary Treleven or Associate Director, Professor Don Moynihan.

9:30        Welcome and Introductions

9:45-       Faculty Panel: Research Interests and Words of Advice for first semester

10:30      Professors Geoffrey Wallace, Tom DeLeire, Melanie Manion and John Witte

10:30-     Curricular and Academic Information

  • Associate Director Professor Don Moynihan addresses the overview of the graduate program, its core courses and focus fields.
  • Student Services Coordinator Mary Cate Treleven introduces the “red book”, the La Follette student guide and explains dual degree/certificate process.
  • Career Development Coordinator Mary Russell describes how to work effectively to advance your career goals and outlines PA 800, the Career Development Seminar.

10:45      Break

11:00-12:30    LSSA Icebreaker and Connecting with Second-Year Students

Get to know fellow students and La Follette School Student Association (LSSA) President Emily Plagman introduces the association and its officers, sign up to participate in LSSA’s scavenger hunt and/or community volunteer activity.

12:30 Lunch with faculty, staff & some continuing students at Grainger Hall,

  • Executive Dining Room

2pm Statistics and Microeconomics Assessment Exams

4pm Wilson Law, TA for PA 818 administers assessment exam.

4:30        Unwind and relax with second year students and new friends on the Terrace after your exam.

Wednesday, August 26

10–11:30         Benefits Meeting for La Follette Fellows and Project Assistants

(Mandatory for all La Follette Fellows and new PAs)

  • 2270 Grainger Hall, University Avenue

11–1pm           LSSA Used Textbook Sale

  • La Follette Building Student Lounge

1–3pm             Math Review for Statistics and Microeconomics (Optional)

  • 1270 Grainger Hall

Thursday, August 27

9–11 am          Review of Assessment Exam and Math Review

  • 1270 Grainger Hall

12–4pm           LSSA Scavenger Hunt (Optional)

6pm Potluck Dinner for New Students, their friends and Families Drinks & Dessert will be provided.

Friday, August 28

8-11:30 am     LSSA Community Service Project (Optional)

1-3 pm            Math Review (Optional)

5pm                 LSSA Happy Hour

Graduate School Orientation Activities: The Graduate School is the department that oversees all graduate programs at the university. The department offers additional orientation activities on Wednesday and Thursday evening:


12:30 – 2:00 pm   Panel Discussions with current graduate students

2:15 – 3:00 pm     Fellowship Orientation (recipients only)

1:00 – 4:00 pm     Resource Fair, Great Hall

4:00 – 6:00 pm     Graduate Student Collaborative Reception


5pm–9pm        Multicultural Graduate Network (MGN) Reception
