Today’s post comes from former-La Flog-skeptic and new-La Flog-convert Ian Ritz, LSSA Social Coordinator. Here we get some insight into how LSSA events get organized!
LSSA Social Committee
What types of things does the social committee do and why is there a social coordinator on the LSSA board?
Questions like these arise from time to time – indeed I have asked them myself – and they should be addressed. They’re important questions and I want to present my perspective of how to answer them.
The La Follette School of Public Affairs is a professional academic institution. We have a plethora of class options and some of the top academics in their disciplines instructing us. Whether you’re a MIPA or a MPA, the La Follette program is rigorous and the majority of students are involved in work and activities outside of the classroom.
Such an intense program can be exhausting at the best of times and overwhelming at the worst. Therefore, it is important, even necessary, to have opportunities to shed the stresses of life and relax for a bit. The LSSA Social Committee tries to offer a variety of activities that can help do this. From Happy Hours, to apple picking, bowling nights, and a formal event, we attempt to have events that are of interest to all students.
Furthermore, social events are excellent opportunities for First and Second year students to interact. It is easy to get locked into a class schedule where you see the same people, but it is important to mingle and get to know your fellow classmates.
Hopefully this has informed you about the LSSA Social Committee. I encourage you to attend social events and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

P.S. A quick plug for an upcoming LSSA social event. This Friday, October 2, 2009 we will be at the Schwoegler Entertainment Center (444 Grand Canyon Dr.) from 8:30 onward for a LSSA Bowling Night.
