Internship: Komen for the Cure

In an effort to  offer access to resources and information, as well as keep students informed about each other, La Flog is requesting submission of 100+ word descriptions of your summer internships.

My internship this summer is with the Madison affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Every two years, Komen affiliates have to put out a community profile that details, quantitatively and qualitatively, the needs of the community served. My position requires me to collect basic data about South Central Wisconsin and handle the writing and editing of the profile. My co-intern is handling the collection of qualitative data. She is running focus groups, sending out surveys, and interviewing key people in the community. Our goal is to identify gaps in service and, with the input of the Komen staff and board members, set priorities and make recommendations for how to meet the goals.

It has been really interesting to work with an advocacy group. And I look forward to learning more about Wisconsin, breast cancer, health policy, and advocacy as I work with Komen this summer.

Sylvia Fredericks is working hard this summer both for Komen and WISCAPE.
